Hovy Wong – Harnessing presynaptic translational control to correct synaptic transmission #2

Congratulations to Hovy Wong from Dr. Jesper Sjöström’s Laboratory who is the winner of the 2019 MRM Photo Contest with his picture entitled “Harnessing presynaptic translational control to correct synaptic transmission #2”.

Aquisition with 2-photon laser scanning microscopy after performing quadruple whole-cell electrophysiological recordings for neurotransmission. Cells in different colours were selectively loaded with either protein synthesis inhibitor or control solution (+ fluorescent dyes).
In this picture, cells in Red were loaded with an inhibitor of mTOR- a master translation regulator that is known to mediate axon guidance, synaptogenesis and axon regeneration after injury. Cells in Cyan were loaded with control internal solution. Here, I am trying to interrogate its potential in correcting neurotransmission deficits that are found in neurological disorders.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the contest and contributed to its success. Special thanks to the members of the Prizes and Awards Committee, who took the time to analyse and evaluate each picture submitted:

  • Dr. Vahab Soleimani (Chair)
