2025 MRM Talks: Valerio Piscopo and Alexandra Chapleau
The MRM Network presents: the MRM Talks. Join us to learn more about stem cells and regenerative medicine. Our webinar series will showcase prominent scientists in the field, including MRM Principal Investigators and external guest speakers.
During each seminar, we will also showcase the work of one MRM Trainee, who will present alongside our guest speaker.
In this edition of the MRM Talks:
Valerio Piscopo, Ph.D.
Research Associate, NeuroEDDU
Senior lead – Glial biology
McGill University
“Overview of iPSC to glia workflows: Focus on Oligodendrocytes”
MRM Trainee:
Alexandra Chapleau,
PhD Candidate, labs of Geneviève Bernard and Thomas Durcan
McGill University
“Applications of iPSC-derived oligodendrocytes in studies of leukodystrophies”

About the speakers:
Valerio Piscopo, Ph.D. is a developmental neuroscientist specializing in neural stem cells and the molecular pathways governing brain cell differentiation. With a Ph.D. focused on dopaminergic neuron development, he investigated tumor-initiating cells and their invasive properties at the Neuro before joining EDDU (Early Drug Discovery Unit) in 2019. There, his research has centered on glial cell differentiation, particularly oligodendrocytes, microglia and their role in brain homeostasis and disease. His recent work explores microglia’s function in neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation, including Parkinson’s disease , ALS, and leukodystrophies.
Alexandra Chapleau is a PhD candidate at McGill University, conducting research in the labs of Dr. Geneviève Bernard and Dr. Thomas Durcan. Her work focuses on characterizing genetic myelin disorders, known as leukodystrophies, caused by defects in the translational apparatus. Beyond the lab, Alexandra is actively involved in rare disease advocacy and is passionate about bridging her research with patient-centered initiatives.
